ENA comments on 'hydrogen town' proposals

ENA comments on 'hydrogen town' proposals: Gas engineers

Applications have been submitted to BEIS to develop outline plans for the roll-out of hydrogen heating that include 'hydrogen town' proposals.

In response Silvia Simon, Head of Hydrogen at Energy Networks Association (ENA), which represents the UK’s energy network operators, said:

“These proposals are a critical next step in making net zero a reality, showing how hydrogen infrastructure could start to be rolled out once the industry’s evidence gathering and trials are complete. Hydrogen will play a central role in decarbonising a wide range of sectors, and the projects now under consideration by BEIS reflect the progress made, and the benefits to customers, businesses and the climate.”

Notes to editors

  • In the UK Hydrogen Strategy the UK Government committed to developing plans by 2025 for a possible hydrogen heated town
  • The aim of the outline plan for the town project is to provide further information to inform policy decisions and future roll-out plans
  • If implemented, any technologies used in the town project will have already been deemed safe by the Health and Safety Executive following previous assessments
  • Following this submission, BEIS will make a decision on the proposals, announcing the results later in the year
